Book Review: The Sweetheart Fix

I am truly trucking along, trying to finish up Christmas stuff. I have decided to try baking this year, and I think all of my family are a bit nervous. Since my AFE and stroke (2016), cognitively, I'm not great. I'm not the absolute worst but you don't want me in charge of anything important, let's put it that way. So... wish me luck. Ha!

The Sweetheart Fix - Miranda Liasson

Juliet Montgomery absolutely loves her small town of Blossom Glen, Indiana, and everyone loves her. Except for the fact that she’s a couples counselor who suffered a very public breakup that no one can forget. And now her boss asks her to take a step back…which is exactly when the town’s good-lookin’ and unusually gruff mayor offers her an unexpected job.

Jack Monroe absolutely loves being the mayor of his small town. Except when he actually has to talk to people. Can’t he just fix the community problems in peace? Like right now, he’s mediating the silliest dispute two neighbors could possibly have. When the town sweetheart steps up and solves everyone’s problems in five minutes flat, Jack realizes what this town really needs…is a therapist.

Juliet is able to soothe anyone—other than the surly mayor, it seems. But there’s a reason they say opposites attract, because all of their verbal sparring leads to some serious attraction. Only, just like with fireworks, the view might appear beautiful—but she’s already had one public explosion that’s nearly ruined everything…how can she risk her heart again?

Book two in the Blossom Glen series but this is a stand alone, but it's only the second book so jump on the train and get the first one because you'll love that one, too. (Some of the characters from book one appear in this one but you won't be lost if you haven't read that one yet.) I am right now down the middle with this one, I felt like it was slow for the solid first half of the book. Once things got going, I really liked the pace and the story, I just wish it got going sooner in the book.

Things I really did like include the characters (Miranda Liasson always writes clever and fun characters, ones you could see yourself befriending or knowing) and the humor! I am such a fan of romance with some humor in it and finding myself gravitating towards that more often. Just like a standard midwest, small town romance, we have family dynamics (the good, the bad, the sticky and complicated), but we also have loss, and we explore the dangers of secrets in relationships. I absolutely loved Juliet, she's a can-do gal who knows her past affects her present and future, but she doesn't let it cripple her, she keeps moving forward.

If you're a fan of a second chance romance, with a swoon-worthy guy with a sense of humor, The Sweetheart Fix is absolutely for you! And just in time for the holidays, you can read about Santa panties. (If you need a gift idea for a friend, get her this book with some Santa panties...you're welcome.)

Book Review: No, You Sit!

Happy Monday! We've got like 13 days until Christmas or something like that, are you ready? I feel ready. I've been sick and just generally not feeling great so that's kind of been a bummer. I'm getting through some books though, so there's that.

No, You Sit! - PD the Pug

From the acclaimed author of Get Me Out Of Here! Reflections Of PD The Put-Upon Pug, comes every dog’s fantasy, brought to life in this hilarious rumination that uncovers exactly how to turn the master into the servant.
I haven't read the first one, this is my first experience with PD the Pug, so I went into this not knowing what to expect. It was a short book, you can read through this easily within an hour, so I can always appreciate a fast read. It was humorous and clever, I definitely chuckled because I can absolutely imagining some of these things going through my own Twinky's head.
The book isn't just about pugs, other dogs are mentioned so your dog will feel included, so no worries. My Twinky has me fully trained, my entire day circles around him, his nap schedule, and his potty breaks. Perhaps Twinky has somehow communicated with PD because a lot of the tips mentioned in the book are things I've experienced with my little dog.

Overall, this was a cute book, full of humor, and definitely something any dog lover/owner would really enjoy. Outside of that, I'm not sure who the targeted audience would really be. My seven year old even read it and she absolutely loved it, so I don't think I'm the demographic they are aiming for. It isn't a book I'd see on a table and think, "Oh, I'm going to buy this", it's more of something I'd see on a waiting room table and read through because its there and I've got time. The book comes in at 170 pages, but with the larger type chapter titles, illustrations, and generous breaks betweek sections, it reads quick and you'll get a smile (maybe even a laugh) or two. I thought the writing was good for the kind of book it was (I mean, its written by a dog, this isn't literary fiction).

Book Review: Forever Bound

Do you ever read a book that maybe isn't something you would normally read and then you end up kind of loving it despite the flaws? That's exactly where I'm at with this one.

Forever Bound - Jessica Dall

From the minute Bridget Marshall began renovating the old Irish Castle she bought outside the Village of Shansally, Ireland (pop. 119) she’d been on the verge of being labeled another “Silly American.” But after years of managing other people’s hotels, she’s ready to run one herself. And nothing will get in her way, not even her grumpy next-door neighbor, Liam O’Flannagain.

Soon, though, the dream Bridget’s been waiting for is becoming a living nightmare. The renovations, not to mention the budget, are out of control, and someone—or something—is determined to get her out of the castle. And if that wasn’t enough, whenever she’s with Liam, the castle’s ancient past seems to come roaring to life, sweeping them along in a story they’re apparently destined to relive.

If she is to uncover the castle’s secrets, Bridget will need Liam’s help to figure out exactly how they’re connected…before the tragic past repeats itself.

Full disclosure, I absolutely figured this out a quarter of the way through, it was kind of predictable to say the least, but I was invested and I had to know what was going on with the storyline from the past, of which I didn't figure out quite as fast but that worked out for me. I loved Liam's broodiness, I thought Bridget was kind of an airhead who wasn't really respectful of other people's feelings and that bothered me. Like, you're basically dating one guy, but sneaking away with another, and you can't understand why either one would be upset? Come on, now.

I love the time slips, it almost reminded me of Debra Anastasia's For All the Evers, another book with a time slip story line. Now, while my gut reaction is an eye roll, dammit if I don't think about that book often and already, I'm a week out from finishing Forever Bound and I keep thinking about it, so clearly there's something about that trope that sticks with me.

I unexpectedly loved this one and I want to read more from Jessica Dall, her writing just kept me with her and the story, so there's something to it. If you're looking for an actually fast read, this would be a great one, especially if you love a good Irish castle, a hunky Irishman, some fairy lore, buried treasure, star crossed lovers, and forbidden love, this is your next book.

Christmas traditions: Bentleyville

It's December, it's full on Christmas season, I am in full mom, make-Christmas-special-and-memorable-for-everyone mode, so the first stop? Bentleyville, of course!

If you've never been to Bentleyville, it's a huge outdoor light display in Duluth, Minnesota and it is totally free and kids 10 and under get a free hat after their visit with Santa. It's kind of amazing, and you can find it on TikTok (Bentleyville USA), it's all over social media, and you'll find it featured on all kinds of shows. We go every year and it's always a gamble on when we go, we try to go on a warm night because it is right next to Lake Superior so when its cold, it is COLD. Oftentimes if its a warmish night, we will drop everything and go then because I'd rather miss something than stand in the Santa line for an hour and dance with hypothermia.

The little girls love the giant tree, but it is so hard to get a really good picture of it.
This was the first year we didn't have all four kids with us, Olivia was out doing her own thing and it really hit me that pretty soon we'll be down to three kids at home, then two, then one, then none. It is so weird to have this process start. As a parent it seems like a far away destination but Matt and I are approaching it and it is the strangest feeling.
My favorite (and the little girls', too) are the arched walk ways. There are a couple of them you walk through and I just love them.
We went to Brainerd, Minnesota this year and went to Paul Bunyan Land, so Pep told me I had to take a picture of Paul Bunyan and Babe!
Lucy insisted on wearing her Minnie ears, which predictably, became an issue so Matt got to wear them through the last half of the walk.
Even though Jackson and I were able to go shopping before leaving but Pep and Lu were fading fast since it was past their bedtime, so by the time we got home they were totally out.
We can cross Bentleyville off our list, next up is baking cookies. I'm not trying to bake with the kids because nothing will send me over the edge than baking with my kids, so that's going to be a solo project. I also want to try to do a few more things but our weekends are already filling up and I always feel like we don't have enough time, you know?

I am super excited for Christmas though, I feel super organized and like I have a good grip on things. I have our Christmas cards done, I just have to print our letter and put them in the envelopes and I'm good to go. I'm even getting started on my wrapping, so I feel like I've got a good handle on things right now. Here's hoping I can keep it up, right??

Book Review & Excerpt: THE HIGHLANDER'S HOLIDAY WIFE

The Highlander's Holiday Wife - Vanessa Kelly

Filled with saucy wit, surprising twists, and unforgettable lovers, the latest novel in USA Today bestselling author Vanessa Kelly's captivating historical romance series puts the most levelheaded Kendrick at the center of a passionate and perilous adventure...
It's Christmastime in Edinburgh, but Lady Samantha Penwith's secret mission takes no holiday: the Highlands-born lass vows to find the assailants who murdered her beloved husband, founder of a charitable school for orphaned boys. On her latest undercover excursion, she closes in on a pair of armed attackers and interrupts another assault, then disappears into the darkness, leaving the lone victim mystified--and lucky to be alive...

Braden Kendrick may be the sensible brother, yet the dedicated doctor routinely ignores the dangers of his late-night calls to the city's slums. But when a fleet-footed rescuer saves his life, he's determined to uncover the stranger's identity. And once he does, he'll find himself facing his own past loss for the first time--and more than willing to risk his heart again, just in time to make the Clan Kendrick's Christmas celebrations more festive than ever...

Despite the title, while this does take place around Christmas, I didn't think it was overly Christmasy, so I guess I wouldn't let the name prevent you from reading this at other times in the year. I'm kind of odd in that I don't really like to read holiday books outside of the holidays, but that's me. I'm odd. I also haven't read anything else from this series, but it was fine as a stand alone. I will say that I wish the romance was just... different. We got so much buildup and then.... I won't say it's a clean romance, but it's a closed door kind of romance so you know what's happening just.... you don't know what's happening, if that makes sense. This one was a bit of a different story because it's clear from the start that children with different abilities aren't really seen as equal, so that's kind of a bummer story line. So we've got that, we've got a romance, we have a possible murder, and we have a maybe coverup/mystery, it's just a lot going on, but it was a pretty good blend making this a good read for anyone.

Excerpt
Kade, one of Braden’s brothers, makes a surprise holiday visit to Edinburgh, along with Angus, the family’s colorful and rather disreputable patriarch. Braden immediately suspects that his family is up to something…

Angus scratched his chin, suddenly looking furtive. “We dinna want ye to feel neglected, particularly at such a special time of year.”

Braden narrowed his gaze. “That sounds a bit fishy, Grandda.”

“Why don’t we join the others in the drawing room,” Kade smoothly interjected. “Braden, I’m sure you must be wanting a drink before dinner, yes?”

Braden nodded. “I should change, first.”

Donella emerged from the back hall. “No need to rush. You can change when I send Pippa upstairs. She’s much less likely to fuss if you take her up to the nursery.”

Pippa, a sweet-tempered four-year-old, was the least fussy child Braden knew.

Over the years, he’d developed excellent instincts when it came to his family. At the moment, his instincts were giving him a good thump between the shoulder blades.

“Why are you all trying to manage me?” he asked.

Donella simply gave him an innocent smile. No one did innocent better than his sister-in-law, but he wasn’t fooled.

Angus heaved a dramatic sigh. “Och, laddie, yer growin’ paranoid. That’s what comes from workin’ so hard. Yer picklinyer brain, which canna be—”

“Why don’t we pickle our brains with a nice whisky,” Kade said as he steered Angus toward the staircase. “I hear you just got a new batch from our Graeme’s distillery.”

“Yes, Logan says it’s quite excellent,” Donella brightly replied.

Braden followed the others up the stairs, listening to their cheerful—and disingenuous—conversation about Graeme’s thriving distillery business. The more he listened, the more he became convinced that some plan was afoot. This visit was not a spur of the moment decision by any means.

Logan was ensconced in a leather club chair by the drawing room’s fireplace, reading his paper.  “Ah, finally. I thought I’d have to drink all this splendid whisky myself.”

Pippa, who’d wedged herself into the chair beside her father, shook her head. “That would be bad, Papa. Mamma would have to scold you for being a scaly hog grubber.”

Donella scowled at Angus. “You’ve been here less than an hour, and you’re already teaching Pippa cant?”

“Me? I never teach the bairns rough words.”

Grandda, you do it all the time,” Kade said.

Joseph walked into the room, catching the tail end of the conversation. “Grandda knows all the best swear words.”

Logan snorted. “Aye, he always had a talent.”

Angus pointed a finger at his great-grandson. “Laddie boy, yer not to be sharin’ any of our secrets. It’s breakin’ the code.”

“There is no such code, and you’ve never been able to keep a secret in your life,” Braden dryly noted.

Donella eyed each of the males. “I would still like to know who is teaching my daughter inappropriate language.”

“Papa,” Pippa replied with lethal candor. “But he told me not to tell you.”

Logan winced. “Oh, bloody—”

Donella whipped up a hand. “Do. Not. Goodness, husband, I expect better of you.”

Braden snorted. “Mistake number one.”

Of course I didn’t actually teach her,” Logan explained. “She just overheard me talking to one of the grooms.” He did his best to look contrite. “Sorry, love. I promise it won’t happen again.”

She scoffed. “It will absolutely happen again. You are a very bad man, Logan Kendrick.”

“I’ll show you just how bad I can be the next time we’re alone,” he said with a grin.

Joseph grimaced. “Ugh. Papa is trying to be romantic again.”

“Are you in trouble, Papa? I’m sorry if I got you in trouble,” Pippa said, placing her little hand on his arm.

He winked at her. “Papa is usually in some sort of trouble. Grandda might have to take me out behind the mews for a paddling.”

Pippa giggled. “Now you’re just being silly.”

“A natural state of affairs.” Donella said. “Now, we have time for one drink before dinner. Cook has gone to a great deal of trouble to make a special dinner for Grandda and Kade, and we mustn’t spoil it.”

“Oh? I thought their arrival was a surprise?” Braden casually asked. “When did Mrs. Brady have time to pull together a special dinner?”

If he hadn’t been watching her closely, he would have missed his sister-in-law’s slight wince.

“That’s why we had to set dinner back. Mrs. Brady had to reorganize the menu a bit,” she said.

“Then we’d best get to it,” Angus said. “I’m that eager to try the new brew.”

While Logan poured the drinks, the rest of them chatted about the new batch from their brother’s distillery, and the general state of affairs in Clan Kendrick. It was as pleasant a family scene as one could imagine. While it might be a cold and gusty evening in late November, in the house all was warm and inviting.

Too bad his blasted family was up to something. Now he had to figure out what it was before they embarked on one of their typically deranged—if well meaning—plans.

When a glass appeared under his nose, Braden glanced up to see Logan regarding him with a quizzical expression.

“You look rather lost in thought,” his brother said.

“Oh, thanks.” He took the glass. “Just thinking about the family.”

Angus heaved a dramatic sigh. “It’s not much time ye have for us. We never see ye, what with yer doctorin’ work and them bodies ye like to cut up for fun. Ye’d think ye love those cadavers more than ye love us.”

“What’s a cadaver?” Pippa asked.

Braden shot his grandfather an irritated look. “I do not cut up dead bodies for fun. Besides, Kade’s away far more than I am. We barely know where he is from one day to the next. Which is perfectly reasonable,” he hastily added. “He’s building his career as a pianist, just as I’m building my medical practice.”

“Aye, but ye—”

“Braden’s right,” Kade said. “If you’re going to bite off anyone’s nose for flying the coop, it should be mine.”

“Aye, but yer in London or on the Continent. Our laddie here is only a few hours away from Glasgow, yet he canna find the time to visit his own family. And the laird himself—that would be yer brother, Nick,” Angus pointedly said to Braden, “is worried about ye.”

“I know who the laird is,” Braden dryly replied.

“Everything is fine, Grandda,” Kade said. “Stop fussing.”

Angus subsided with a mutter.

“By the way,” Braden said, “where’s the rest of the family spending Christmas this year?”

“Oh, at Kinglas, I suppose,” Kade vaguely replied.

“You suppose?”

Angus frowned. “Of course they’ll be at Kinglas. Where else would they be?”

“All of them, including Graeme and Sabrina?”

“Aye, unlike some people we willna mention.”

Donella jumped up. “More whisky, anyone? I can fetch it.”

Joseph frowned. “But Mamma, you said there was only time for one glass, remember?”

When Donella sighed, Braden was tempted to laugh. His family’s clumsy charade was falling apart before his eyes.

“We’re not sure about Graeme and Sabrina,” Logan hastily put in. “Awfully long trip from Lochnagar to Kinglas at this time of year.”

Of course they’re goin’ to Kinglas, ye ninny,” Angus said. “I told ye that.”

Logan shook his head in disbelief.

“Do ye really think our Braden doesn’t ken what we’re doin’?” Angus demanded. “He’s got more brains than the rest of ye put together.”

“True,” Kade said. “But we were trying to be slightly more subtle about it.”
